GIS Analysis

Agricultural Potential

An exercise was undertaken to establish the Agricultural Potential for a region. GIS analysis was done to establish the viability of planting various crops in this region.

GIS activities included in this project include

  • Create a 3 dimensional TIN Model of the region.
  • Derive Slope, Aspect and Elevation information from the TIN Model.
  • Obtain Climatic information 3rd party data custodians
  • Obtain potential yields information from 3rd party data custodians
  • Using GIS to present the results of the sample data

The most optimal cultivating areas could be deduced for various crops by undertaking a geographical analysis of the above mentioned data. By establishing where the terrain had less than a 20% slope and was north facing and had sufficient annual rainfall, we could make recommendations as to where agricultural potential was highest in the identified region.
